JBP Manufactures and Delivers Concrete for Over 1,000 Power Lines
Rocky Mountain Power recently energized the first section of Energy Gateway, an extensive transmission expansion intended to add 2,000 miles to company’s high capacity transmission lines to meet the growing customer need for electricity, enhance service reliability, and keep energy costs as low as possible.
Jack B. Parson Companies (JBP) was selected to supply the ready-mixed concrete used in the foundation supports for over 1,000 transmission towers on the Populus to Terminal transmission line being constructed from Downey, Idaho to Salt Lake City, Utah. The project spans 115 miles and will supply 345,000 volts of electrical transmission to consumers across the Wasatch front. The tower foundations ranged from 60-feet deep to 120-feet deep, requiring up to 680 cubic-yards of concrete per foundation.
Though the project was challenging given restrictive travel times and the large geography, the JBP team rose to the challenge utilizing seven different plants and its large truck fleet. At completion, over 130,000 cubic yards of concrete will be used for the project.
There were several unique requirements for this job: a flowable slump, 4-6% air entrainment, ¾” maximum rock size, and a maximum 90 minute delivery mandate. Despite the challenges, all of the concrete met the requirements and JBP placed the concrete at an impressive 4.7 cubic yards per hour.
“This project is a great example of Jack B. Parson Companies’ capability to supply quality products for challenging projects” said Ready-mix Operation Manager Hudd Hayes. “We would like to thank Rocky Mountain Power and the many contractors involved in this project. We would also like to thank our team of professionals who worked closely with the contractors and engineers to ensure that the mix design was flowable, had good workability and met the high standards of quality that JBP provides to every project. Our drivers worked 44,000 incident free hours on this project.”
