National Asphalt Pavement Association Selects Staker Parson as Ecological Award Finalist

November 30th, 2009

OGDEN, Utah—Staker Parson Companies, a leading manufacturer of ready-mixed concrete, asphalt, and rock products, was selected as one of two finalists to receive the annual National Asphalt Pavement Association (NAPA) Ecological Award. NAPA is recognizing Staker Parson’s Point East facility in Draper, Utah as one of the top hot mix asphalt plants in the nation with successful environmental sustainability initiatives, including environmental management programs, community outreach efforts, energy efficient plant designs, and exemplary performance practices.

Mike Dalley, environmental advisor for Staker Parson Companies said, “We’re honored to receive such a prestigious award that recognizes our four-tiered environmental sustainability effort at the Point East plant.”

According to Dalley, Staker Parson’ comprehensive sustainability program includes community outreach efforts, resource conservation, quality control initiatives and an Environmental Management System (EMS). The EMS program provides a benchmark for continual improvement of local and federal environmental compliance by monitoring energy efficiency and water use.

Staker Parson’s community outreach program called “Rocks Build Our World,” is presented to grade school students along Utah’s Wasatch Front region.  The program teaches elementary school students about the beneficial uses of aggregates and asphalt materials, and how asphalt positively impacts the surrounding community’s quality of life.

The company also established a resource conservation program that incorporates using post-consumer recycled fuels, aggregates, and binders.  Staker Parson re-uses these products in recycled asphalt pavement to supplement the need for liquid asphalt instead of sending these bi-products to the land fill. Use of post-consumer recycled products provides a sustainable use of materials that would otherwise be land filled.

“Tying all these programs together, the environmental sustainability initiatives ensure that Staker Parson can provide consistent high-quality products that not only meet, but exceed the expectations of our customers and the community,” adds Dalley.

The award will be presented in January at NAPA’s 55th Annual Meeting held in Maui, Hawaii.
