June 29, 2012

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah–Work on the light rail line from Salt Lake City’s downtown Arena Station to the Salt Lake International Airport is nearing completion and scheduled to be operational by April 2013. The six-mile double track line features ballast rock and colored concrete among other material supplied by Staker Parson Companies and Jack B. Parson Companies (JBP), including:

30,000 cubic yards ready-mixed concrete (18,000 cubic yards of which is colored concrete)
33,000 tons one-inch rock
322,000 tons road base
90,000 tons cobble rock
683 tons asphalt

Under construction since January 2009, the new line not only provides direct access to the airport for thousands of commuters, it will rejuvenate Salt Lake City’s west side with vibrant business and a revitalized retail environment. The Utah Transit Authority estimates approximately 10,000 passengers per day will ride the service by 2015 and up to 14,000 per day by 2030.

The airport light rail is one of several rail projects that include material supplied by Staker Parson and JBP. The companies also supplied aggregates and ready-mixed concrete for the West Valley and Draper line extensions which will extend service from downtown Salt Lake City to Provo.
