Project Description:

Hales Sand & Gravel partnered with UDOT to complete a roadway improvement project near the scenic Scofield Reservoir, a popular recreation area known for its mountain views and clear blue waters.

The project utilized a Cold-In-Place Recycle (CIR) process, in which existing asphalt was milled, rejuvenated with an asphalt binder, and then repaved and compacted to create a more durable base. Following the CIR process, crews placed a 2-inch lift of ½” HMHMA to provide a smooth and long-lasting surface.

“This was a great opportunity for our first project with HMHMA,” said project manager Dan Gillie. “We enjoyed beautiful views and perfect weather while our Hales team worked with Nielson’s batch plant and crews to deliver a quality road in the scenic Scofield area.”

This marked Hales Sand & Gravel’s first project paving with an HMHMA mix, a specialized, high-performance asphalt designed to improve pavement strength and extend service life. The team worked closely with the Nielson Construction & Materials’ Huntington Hot Plant, which supplied the asphalt for this project, ensuring high-quality results from start to finish.

Completion of this project now results in a durable roadway and bridge deck that complements the natural beauty of the area and enhances traveler safety.
